HPEO - Options for Freshmen

Click here for options for upperclassmen.

UNIT 1 -- SERVICE

  • Provide 20 hours of service for a person, office or facility on campus. Examples include: working for a professor or a department; computer lab help desk; Honors Office; Library; Fitness Center; etc...
  • Decide where you would like to work, and approach the appropriate person (secretary, faculty member, supervisor). Tell them that you would like to work, that you will work for 20 hours during the semester, and that your services are at no charge to them.
  • If you have difficulty finding or deciding on a service placement, contact Mr. Clark for friendly advice and assistance.
  • Once you have identified a service area, you will need your supervisor's name, phone number, and email address, to enter into the HPEO Online Commitment form. Your supervisor's name may already appear on the drop down menu. If so, just click on it, and the rest of the supervisor's information will not be needed. You will also need to enter a brief, simple description of what you will be doing for your service. Doesn't have to be in great detail.
  • You need to keep track of your hours of service. We have a paper form that you can use for this purpose. Plan to complete your service as soon as you can. You and your supervisor should agree upon a regular weekly schedule.
  • When your service is complete, we will ask your supervisor to confirm your completion by email.

UNIT 2 -- Personal / Professional Development

  • For fall semester, your only option for Unit 2 will be 20 hours of activities. For complete information about this option, visit the Activities Info Page.
  • During spring semester of freshman year, you will have the option to attend and present at the Tennessee State Honors Conference. If you are interested in this option, you must plan ahead. Watch your email! Dr. Barnes will be soliciting attendees and presenters for the state conference late in fall semester. You should discuss your interest in this option with her before the beginning of spring semester. Attending and presenting at this conference will fulfill completely your Unit 2 requirement.

UNIT 3 -- Group Participation / Service

  • There are TWO options for this unit: (a) Participate in an ASG committee or group; or, (b) Participate actively in at least TWO chartered campus organizations of your choice.
  • Each ASG Committee has its own rules for fulfilling participation requirements. If you choose an ASG committee, your name will automatically be forwarded to the chair of that committee, and you will be contacted by him/her.
  • If you wish to participate in campus organizations to fulfill this unit, type in the names of the organizations you wish to participate in. Religious organizations or clubs do not qualify for fulfillment of this Unit, since it is assumed that you have already-existing personal, religious motivations for participating.
  • You must keep track of your participation in campus organizations by entering each club function or activity that you attend. At semester's end, we will ask for confirmation that you have actually attended the events that you submitted.
